The good thing about all of this is that there are tons of ponds and a lot of good bass fishing areas. I decided to go to a nearby pond and try it out. I ended up catching two pumpkinseed fish. They look like a bluegill but with a lot more color and a lot more fight. They were quite aggressive in snatching my spinner for such a small fish.<br />

I didn't go fishing as often as I would like mainly because I didn'tknow where to go. We moved Apartments in January of 2012 and it just so happened that we lived above some awesome neighbors. We didn't really formally meet until about a month later in church. I was sitting in priesthood and <a class="g-profile" href="http://plus.google.com/114757744918351145608" target="_blank">+Ben Friend</a> shook my hand and informed me that he was my neighbor. I don't remember much about the conversation we had but I remembered how friendly he was. A few weeks later as we were heading out of our apartment to go to church, Ben and his family were getting into their car and he came over and invited us to lunch after church. We excepted and have since then found out what great friends the Friends are.<br />
<br />
Kat and Julia hit it off early sharing the same weird tv shows they like to watch. Their kids (Maddie and Bubba) instantly took to me and never left my side. Ben and I started talking about fish and he introduced me to the "Tiger Muskie". He also invited me to come ice fishing with him one of those days and I accepted. <br />
<br />
That next Saturday we embarked on the first of many fishing adventures. I owe it to Ben for most of my fishing knowledge. Before him, the only fish I had ever really fished for were catfish and trout. He taught me all about Bass fishing (and got me hooked on it might I add), Muskie Fishing, crappie and blue gill, and much more. He also invited me to have fish tacos on more than one occasion with his family to try out bass and bluegill, etc meat for the first time.<br />
<br />
Well, sadly people come and go in our lives and the last weekend of April would be our last time ever fishing together. I moved to Boston for the summer to do a summer job and Ben has graduated and will be moving his family to Alabama or somewhere else in the south soon to start his career there.<br />
<br />
We planned out a last time ultimate camping/fishing trip so we could properly say goodbye, and what a fun trip it was!<br />
<br />
We scouted out the area of cutler reservoir and decided to take boats down close to cutler dam and camp on an island. Camping on the island really brought the boy out in me. It was fun and adventurous. We could fish on all sides of the campsite. We loaded up our boats (and I mean loaded!) and putted down the lake to the island....<br />

<br />
We threw out some poles as we set up camp...Although we brought some wood with us, whoever was here last left us some dry wood. We used some and left some of our own behind again. We fished most of the night but only managed to catch those pesky mud cats and a few carp. The next day we fished in the boats all morning but still only caught mud cats and carp. Either way it was a really fun trip and it was a good way to say goodbye to a great friend.<br />

Most of the time it has ended up with me being frustrated and getting my flies stuck in trees. I can finally say though, that I have managed to catch fish there. About a month or two ago, Ben Friend started catching some fish on the Logan. He told me where to go and said that he would meet up with me later. I got to the spot and tried fly fishing to no avail. When Ben got there, he didn't have his fly gear, rather a pole and the trusty Blue Fox gold spinner. I decided I needed to try that as well and sure enough, fish on! I was so happy to finally break the Logan river curse...<br />

I haven't been able to succeed and was stumped as to why. I finally figured it out the other day; it's because I have been taking them to Hyrum! I have tried and tried to like Hyrum. I just don't seem to catch many fish there no matter who I'm with or what I do. So I decided to take a little bit longer of a drive today and took Rosco out to Newton. Rosco is the only foster kid I take out now and it had been a long time since we visited Newton. He was excited and so was I. I could sense that he was finally going to be able to catch a fish.<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
We got to Newton and walked to the place where Ben and I had been fishing before, hoping to reopen the holes we made with a machete I have. We got to the location we were at on Saturday and the snow had covered everything up. I started to brush snow away with my foot and told Rosco "I know the holes are right here somewhere". All of a sudden I hear a CRACK! and Rosco's foot had stepped onto a hole and he fell through to his leg. (I know I know, it seems a little rude to laugh but it was kind of hilarious watching him flail his arms unable to move anywhere til I could help him.) My safety instincts kicked in and I immediately ordered him out of his boot and sock and had him wrap my coat around his foot to dry and keep warm. We got him settled and he replies "at least we know where the holes are now!"</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
With that comment I figured we might as well fish for a bit and try and dry out his sock. So after wringing the sock as best I could, I set it on the back of his chair and got our poles rigged and ready. We dropped our lines down to the bottom and then reeled up about two turns. We waited for a while and just when I was thinking we should move to a different spot, I saw a little tug on my pole. Rosco soon after yelled about getting a bite and soon was able to pull this nice perch up...</div>

I pulled one up soon after and we were excited. We had a few more tugs, but missed them all and it died back down. We finally decided to pack up and get back in the car to warm his foot up better. We got into the car and started driving and passed a town called Benson. I remembered a spot where Ben showed me once where it was good fishing for blue gil so I asked Rosco if he wanted to try it. He said he did and felt his sock and boot were dry enough to walk in. We walked out and noticed an old man coming off of the ice there. We decided to fish where he had dug holes. We started getting little taps and I kept pulling the hook out of the fishes mouths. Rosco all of a sudden gets a tug on his pull and ended up catching a nice little Large mouth. Unfortunately by this time my phone was dead so I didn't get a picture but Rosco sure was happy about it. We had to leave soon after but I'm glad I was able to get Rosco some fish. Seeing him that happy really made my day.</div>

It was the right decision. Newton has become my favorite place to fish over the last year. It has plenty of variety of fish, and it almost never ceases to disappoint. Even if I go there and have a slow day, I'm always willing to go back because I know how good it can be. That, and there is always the chance for the elusive Tiger Muskie.<br />
<br />
We got up and headed out to the lake at 6 am. After a brief stop at the store to restock some propane for the heater, we got there right at sunrise. It was a bright, clear day from the start. We made a little hike to stay clear of getting stuck in the snow, but the snow was frozen hard, and we followed old trails that made pulling Ben's ice sled a piece of cake. Ben had been doing some research and we decided to try and fish in a little more shallow water due to the perch spawn soon to come. We fished maybe 10 - 20 yards off shore where it was only 12 feet deep.<br />
<br />
The struggles:<br />
<br />
Ben had surgery on his arm last week, so it was hard for him to dig holes. Not wanting him to hurt himself, I offered to dig his holes for him. The problem was, i was sick all day Thursday, and although I had had plenty of rest and I thought I had regained all my strength, my body let me know otherwise. I felt so weak! It was pretty pathetic, I was huffing and puffing just to finish one hole. I finally finished digging the holes and in the meantime, Ben had gotten the tent set up. We picked the tent up over the holes and got our chairs and equipment inside. Pretty drained from my pathetic performance, I didn't have any desire to mess with any of the jigs that were on the ice poles. So I let down a bigger jig normally used for trout, with a pink head and a white body tipped with a wax worm on one pole; and I used a green ice fly tipped with wax worm on the other. <br />
<br />
The rewards:<br />
<br />
It didn't seem to matter what we used however, because as soon as we let our lures down into the water and let them sink to the bottom, we had a fish on. We actually ended up only using one pole each because the action was so hot. At the beginning of the trip, Ben wasn't sure if he wanted to keep any perch, but by this time we decided to keep one limit (50 perch). Even with this goal, we were throwing back about 3 out of every 4, only keeping the bigger and fatter ones. We easily reached the 50 perch for the day and we estimated having caught around 200 fish all together. It was a very fun day and very rewarding. The only regret we had was that we wished we had brought Ben's 8 year old daughter out to get a great experience.<br />
<br />
Towards the end of the day, we were having a bit of fun. The water was really clear and we could see our bait down at the bottom of the lake, so Ben decided to have a bit of fun and make it a bit more challenging by fishing by hand. We would wait til we saw the fish take the lure, and then yank it to set the hook. It was a fun day.<br />

I've wanted to go there for sometime now, hearing of big muskies and crappie (pronounced crop - ey). We arose early in the morning and got to the lake a little before sunrise. It was really foggy and the fog made the frigid morning extra cold. Pulling the sled with all the ice fishing equipment however got our blood pumping and we were nice and warm when we got to our destination. <a class="g-profile" href="http://plus.google.com/114757744918351145608" target="_blank">+Ben Friend</a> has a friend on bigfishtackle.com fishing forum who was kind enough to give us some gps coordinates to a spot on the lake where there usually are some big crappie. We dug our holes and the fishing was a little slow, but enough to keep us there. It soon got too cold for us again and we put up some tents. <a class="g-profile" href="http://plus.google.com/114757744918351145608" target="_blank">+Ben Friend</a> also came prepared with an extra tent and heater that he borrowed from a friend.<br />

It was all perch in the beginning, though <a class="g-profile" href="http://plus.google.com/114757744918351145608" target="_blank">+Ben Friend</a> had caught a few crappie. I finally pulled up my very first crappie! I was very happy with it.<br />

We set out early Saturday morning hoping to get to Hyrum Reservoir just before sunrise. We met <a class="g-profile" href="http://plus.google.com/105071377354945512556" target="_blank">+Ben Bartholomew</a> at a store in Hyrum and drove to the lake. We got there and packed the sled to the other side where <a class="g-profile" href="http://plus.google.com/114757744918351145608" target="_blank">+Ben Friend</a> had caught some nice fish before. It was a very chilly morning...<br />

The fishing was slow but picked up off and on. We ended up with around 40 or so fish caught, and kept about 10 of them to eat...</div>

Then again, it's been a while since I've had a good quality fishing trip as well. Sure, I've been fishing since I've posted last and I've also caught some pretty decent fish; but I also started school and that had to take priority. This semester was the first time for me being a dad, as well as work and school and it took a while to get used to. I found I haven't had much time to blog. Hunting season is another reason I haven't blogged for a while. The free time that I did manage to find was spent hunting birds with Ben and Ben and once with my brother in law Jared.
<p><p><p>
Yesterday, Friend Ben asked me what I was doing, I told him nothing that I just finished a Final and had nothing to do the rest of the day. He had the great idea to head up the mountains and see if a lake was frozen over. I concurred that it was a great idea so later that afternoon we headed up. We decided to go to Tony's grove, a popular summer lake for residents of Cache Valley. I had never been there but always intended to. The roads were clear until about 5 miles left of our journey.<p><p><p><p><p><p>

It's always a bit scary going out on the ice for the first time. You never know if its going to be thick enough. We were fairly certain it was thick enough however, due to the 8 or so inches of snow on top of the ice. We went out a few feet and Ben tested the ice. After about 6 inches down, we knew the ice was good and headed out further onto the lake. We found a spot a quarter of the way out in the lake and decided to try it out. Ben dug the holes in the ice and we set out a couple poles.

<p><p><p><p><p><p><p><p><p>We moved out into the middle of the lake finally and the fishing got hotter. We set up our poles and caught fish of various sizes and coloring (all rainbow trout). It was a fun afternoon but soon after the sun went behind the mountain it started getting too cold for comfort and we decided to head home, just in time too because it started snowing a bit as we left.

He asked his mom (primary chorister) in the middle of singing time if I could come with them and I'm sure he was pretty persistent after church because around 5 last night they called and formally invited Kat and I to go fishing with them for family home evening. Ethan is pictured below...<p/><p/><p/><p/><p/><p/><p/><p/><p/>

We showed up to Newton around 615 and the Nimer (name of family) boys were generous enough to help me get my gear down to the lake so Kat could take Brian. The fishing was slow to start, I was just casting the brush hog and catching a few bass. Doing so I looked around and got a peek at what my future might hold taking my kid(s) fishing. The dad didn't get much fishing in but he was enjoying himself anyways.
I decided to throw a worm out on my other pole and soon had a perch...<p/><p/><p/><p/><p/><p/><p/><p/><p/>

<p/><p/><p/><p/><p/><p/><p/><p/><p/> It had swallowed the hook so I figured I might as well keep it for bait. Ethan and his siblings had fun playing with the dead fish before I cut it up, even their little 5 year old sister (I thought she was pretty brave for a 5 year old) was picking it up and pretending to talk with it. While the kids were being entertained by the fish, Brother (don't know his first name >-: ) Nimer took the opportunity to fish. He threw out his blue fox spinner and was catching a few bass when all of a sudden I hear a big splash! I knew right away it was a muskie so I ran over to help him. He got the fish right to the shore line when the fish turned, took off, and SNAP!, there goes the fish breaking his 6 lb test line. He was pretty disappointing but more so that he lost his good spinner.
Brian was enjoying the great outdoors, but I don't think he was enjoying the hat much...<p/><p/><p/><p/><p/><p/><p/><p/><p/>

I finally cut up the perch and threw it out. I gave some to Ethan's brother, Andrew to try as well. I caught another perch of course but not too long after I start using the perch meat, I see my line get tight, I set the hook, and Wam! MUSKIE!!!

<p/><p/><p/><p/><p/><p/><p/><p/><p/>
I knew instantly this was a much bigger Muskie than the one I caught Saturday; it fought hard, took my drag which was set pretty hard, and just felt heavy. I finally managed to bring it into shore and took off my sandals before approaching the fish. It was a good thing I did because I sunk to my knees in mud. (Don't mind the crack ;>)<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

This muskie was a bute! I quickly got the hook out, took some photos, and had him back in the water where he swam off to freedom.<p/><p/><p/><p/><p/><p/><p/><p/><p/><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

We fished for a while longer then decided it was time to go home. There was no way I was going to put my sandals back on, my feet were just too muddy (and it was the stinky mud too!). But I would rather catch a muskie and get muddy feet anyday!<p/><p/><p/><p/><p/><p/><p/><p/><p/>

The air had a stench of musty cigarettes from all the fires and the temperature had dropped to 50 degrees last night and the wind made it a little chilly. We arrived at the lake just after sunrise and were soon fishing. I threw a worm out and immediately caught a perch, which is what I wanted to catch for use of bait. I threw out perch meat on one side of the boat and decided to try a perch spinner first but wasn't getting any hits. In the meantime Ben threw out a buzz bait (which clacks above the water) and right when he pulled the bait out to recast a tiger muskie surfaced chasing after it and giving Ben a good scare. We switched baits and both put on plastic baits. I have never really fished with plastics before but Ben said they are awesome to fish for bass, and who am I to second guess? The guy knows how to fish!
Sure enough, soon after we switched, we started catching bass. At one point, Ben had a hit and the bass took his plastic worm; he set up a new one and cast out the same area and caught the same bass. We know this because the worm was still in the bass's mouth...if you look close to the picture you can see it. <p/><p/><p/><p/><p/><p/><p/><p/><p/>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbnECX_WiBNbF69zBcsuk6uNSFuqVmuP5GOyNGywf_yqkUS1yawh9Avpce7AfryqHiRrcw00IxK1BZZ2cEF_OP345E_As_5WR5dgUoS82cemftoE3riOj0_P0bIfG8GMNpFNVnEST_Uwg/s1600/2012-08-18_08-21-13_258.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="400" width="226" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbnECX_WiBNbF69zBcsuk6uNSFuqVmuP5GOyNGywf_yqkUS1yawh9Avpce7AfryqHiRrcw00IxK1BZZ2cEF_OP345E_As_5WR5dgUoS82cemftoE3riOj0_P0bIfG8GMNpFNVnEST_Uwg/s400/2012-08-18_08-21-13_258.jpg" /></a></div>
<p/><p/><p/><p/><p/><p/><p/><p/><p/>
The fishing died down so we started trolling around the lake pitching our lures as we went, we caught a few as we went but nothing hot so we kept going. Eventually we got to an area where we could see at least three tiger muskies in the water but couldn't get them to take our bait so we moved on. We got further down the lake and started getting a few more bites when Ben gets a good tug and says "Oh I hope he's a keeper (for fish tacos), wait, it's a muskie!" He brought it in, it got off, and then immediately struck again and Ben made sure the hook set good. We got it in and finally, after trying all year, were able to get Ben a muskie....<p/><p/><p/><p/><p/><p/><p/><p/><p/>

<p/><p/><p/><p/><p/><p/><p/><p/><p/>
That got our adreniline running and we started pitching the same bait (plastic baby brush hogs). We had a few more nibbles but not much, I also caught a few perch on my perch meat. We decided to head back to where the bass fishing was hot and fish along the way. My perch meat pole's drag started going off and at first I thought it was a muskie, but then after it didn't fight and was heavy, I thought it was seaweed. Once it came out of the water, we thought it might be a dead muskie?>>but no, it was just a really old plastic bag...<p/><p/><p/><p/><p/><p/><p/><p/><p/>

<p/><p/><p/><p/><p/><p/><p/><p/><p/>
Then, we noticed a muskie surface in the near distance...<p/><p/><p/><p/><p/><p/>

<p/><p/><p/><p/><p/><p/><p/><p/><p/>
We cruised on over near where it was at and pitched our lures. Ben threw one out that scared it under water; mine was in front of it and I saw the muskie swim past my lure then turn around and slam it. "MUSSSSSSKIIIIIIEEEEEEE!" I yelled, then I hooped and hollered. We got him in and pictures were taken. he measured out to be 32 inches long and felt like a good 8-9 lbs. <p/><p/><p/><p/><p/><p/><p/><p/><p/>

All in all it was a great day, probably one of the most fulfilling fishing adventures I've been on yet. My plan was to catch a perch with worms and use the perch meat for Muskie bait. The water is really low right now so i took the lesiure to take a few photos of the lay of the lake.<p/><p/><p/><p/><p/><p/>

FYI, Anywhere there is white, was under water earlier this year, the lake was completely full.
<p/>
Well, today I learned a new thing, Yellow perch are cannibals! It shouldn't surprise me I guess; once when I was in scouts, we went ice fishing at Fish Lake. My friend Taylor and I weren't catching anything so I decided to throw in part of a granola bar I was eating and sure enough, a perch! So it shouldn't surprise me to find that after catching a perch and using some of it's meat for bait, that I catch perch with it too. <p/><p/><p/><p/><p/><p/>

I caught 4 perch and one bass, but no Muskie, however, there was a man fishing next to me that landed one right as we were packing up. Seeing the fish jump out of the water as it got hooked only invigorated my desire to catch a muskie.Andy Bartholomewhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08595866158422702129noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5153212183922020877.post-7988624963692005462012-08-07T22:27:00.000-07:002012-08-07T22:27:48.168-07:00Newton is Hot!Newton is Hot! (Literally, the thermometer on my car said 104 today). I took Jaquez out to Newton again today and wanted to try a different spot for a chance at bigger fish. I threw my worm out and instantly got a hit...and then it broke, my 20 lb test line snapped just like that...It was a big fish, I know, I know, it's the one that got away...I like to think it was a Tiger Muskie :). After that, I caught a few fish along with this massive bluegill...

For those of you unfamiliar with bluegill, it is a very tasty pan fish. A pan fish defined by Wikipedia is "an edible game fish that usually doesn't outgrow the size of a frying pan". They don't get very big at all, in fact, the state record is 2 lb 7 oz 11 1/2" long and 14 5/8" of girth. I didn't measure it but I know it was bigger than my hand, which is pretty big, and by far the biggest bluegill I've ever seen.
<p/><p/><p/>
I caught a few more and Jaquez had only one. He kept complaining that we needed to go back to the spot we were at last time because the fishing wasn't fast enough for him. So we went back to the spot (kind of) and found the water has been dropping fast. The place we had been fishing is all but dry now. We fished near the location and it was like old times, not being able to put the poles down due to little fish, though Jaquez did manage to pull up this 13 inch Large Mouth...<p/><p/><p/><p/><p/><p/>

I took Ricky out on Wednesday and the fishing was hot! We couldn't keep our poles in the water. The only reason we stopped fishing was because we ran out of worms.&nbsp; We caught lots of bass and yellow perch and Ricky caught a decent blue gill as well.
I took Gerard out the next day to the same spot and it was a little slower at first. I caught a few but gerard wasn't catching anything but small bites. I told him it was because he hadn't called them..." here fishy fishy fishy"... i finally convinced him to do it and by miracle, the moment he calls them, he gets a big bite and he was able to land a nice large mouth. It was all he needed because the fishing picked up and once again we only had a few moments to sit down after we cast out before we were catching fish. Nothing big, but sometimes with young kids, quantity is much better than quality.

<p/><p/><p/><p/><p/><p/>
We didn't catch one today and I have yet to catch one this year but I did end up catching a few other fish...that is, after the crazy boats decided to stop trying to sink us...a couple of big ski boats kept coming past us and close so their wakes kept almost coming over Ben's small fishing boat.

We got to one of the places we were planning on fishing at and I was able to land my first large mouth bass! It was a dinky baby but it was still my first. I also landed a nice 10 inch yellow perch. It has been years since I've caught a perch.

We may not have caught that elusive muskie that I've been after, but we had a great time.Andy Bartholomewhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08595866158422702129noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5153212183922020877.post-11778704775455637492012-07-22T22:06:00.002-07:002012-07-22T22:06:18.857-07:00The last two weeksThese last two weeks I have been doing my two week training period with the national guard. I still took some time to go fishing though :). The first four days were in Manti so I was able to stay with my parents in Fayette. Growing up in Fayette is where fishing started in my life. I remember as a kid going out to the river and calling the catfish "Here fishy fishy fishy!". I also remember going clubbing carp during the flood season. We would go out to the flooded fields with clubs, pitchforks, etc, and walk around bashing the carp. (I know it may sound brutal to some but it was a lot of fun and carp are a trash fish in Utah).
So for memory sake I dug up a very small worm out of the garden and hopped on the 4-wheeler down to the river. I threw the worm on (which was barely bigger than the hook) and cast it out not expecting to catch anything. I heard a splash over on the other side of the bridge and saw a deer crossing the river...<p/><p/><p/><p/><p/><p/><p/><p/><p/>

I didn't catch anything at the river but one night my friend Taylor and I went out to Yuba Reservoir for old time sake. Taylor and I have fished this stretch of the res for years on end. I remember one summer the cat-fishing was particularly good and he pulled out a 16 lb catfish. The res was drained for repairs on the dam and the cat-fishing has never been the same. In fact, on the DNR website it has catfish being in Yuba but in parenthesis it says something like "though they may not be there anymore"
We didn't catch any cats but there were still plenty of carp! and a cool sunset too! We braved a small storm but it passed quick and we had a fun night.

Later in the week we had to travel to Camp Williams near Lehi UT. Taylor and I and a fellow soldier Andy Jones (from here on out I will call him Peeta because he reminds me of Peeta from Hunger Games) took a few trips to the Jordan river and Utah Lake. The first spot we tried along the Jordan turned out to be the best of all the spots we tried. Peeta hadn't fished in a long time so he bought a license and stuck first with this wopper of a fish! <p/><p/><p/>

Later Taylor struck with this decent Channel (it was the biggest cat of the two weeks). <p/><p/><p/>

<p/><p/><p/>
We caught a few more fish then headed home. The next day Taylor had to leave and so some errands so Peeta and I decided to try Utah Lake at the American Fork Harbor. ( A guy suggested this to me on a fishing forum I use <a href="bigfishtackle.com/forum/gforum.cgi?forum=58"></a>) We didn't catch any cats but I caught my first ever White Bass! I may be wrong but I think in Utah the only place to catch them is Utah Lake and maybe Willard Res...either way I wasn't expecting to catch them but really wanted to...<p/><p/><p/>

<p/><p/><p/>
Another species of fish to tack onto my list! (Now if I could only catch a Tiger Muskie)... Both Peeta and I caught white bass that night and that's all that wanted to bite. A couple of days later, Tay, Petta, and I went down to where the Jordan River first starts at Saratoga Springs. We caught a few white bass but they were all small. Overall the week was fun. Its always fun to get a chance to try new waters or go back to old ones. Interesting fact about the Jordan, it received its name because it flows Northward from a fresh water lake, and empties into a Salt water Lake just like the Jordan River in Israel where Christ was baptized. We used worms again and after about an hour or so I finally was able to land my first and only fish of the day ...

I know, I know, it was a GIANT! That's why I had to take a pic! (I almost think the worm was bigger than the fish lol). While we were looking at my fish and releasing it back into the waters, we didn't notice Ricky's pole bending pretty hard. I reached down and set the hook and it was on, Ricky had a fun time pulling it in, it fought good and hard, taking the drag a couple of times. We finally managed to bring it in and this picture says it all... :)

We fished right at the dam next to a small rocky island for a while and while both Ben and John caught some mudcats early on to get rid of their skunk, it took me a while to catch one as well. I finally landed a baby carp and it was fish on from there. The only problem was we weren't catching anything but mudcats. I was using marshmallow on my hook to help it float off the bottom, and added worm to it for a tasty meal for fish. Ben was using I believe worm and beef liver and John I believe was using shrimp and worms.
Ben finally got a big one on his line. In his own words "It was by far the biggest fish I have felt on my pole this year" (And he has caught some pretty big fish already. Unfortunately he said he could feel the line running against rock as he was trying to bring the fish in and before he could maneuver his position the line snapped. Now I know that fisherman tend to exagerate their "fish that got away" stories, but Ben is an honest man and had no need to lie to us. That fish was big, and one of these days we will probably go after him again. The action from there turned to just mudcats so we decided to switch places and head back up the canyon a ways. By that time the sun had set and night had come but the moon was so bright it lit up the canyon quite nicely. We settled near a rocky cove and I cast my line into the cove. I landed my biggest fish of the night there...

He wasn't a monster but was okay sized. From there I kept my line in the cove for a while and pulled a few more channels, though they progressivly got smaller. I cast out the other side of the boat into deeper water and changed one of my poles to a minnow. The minnow was a big hit, but only for more mudcats. Ben pulled out the biggest of the fish (20 inches) but he was in his own boat so I didn't get to snap a picture. We stayed there for a while longer then headed home. It was a great night out, it stayed about 70 degrees the whole time.
JULY 4th...
My brother Ben and his wife came up our way for the 4th. We went to a parade, had a nice BBQ and finally convinced our wives that it was a good idea to head up the mountain a bit to fish. We went up Blacksmith Fork canyon a ways and started fishing. We couldn't get the fish interested in any of our flies at all but it sure was some nice scenery.

All the scenery reminded me of why I love fly fishing. I've been so consumed with cat fishing lately because of a contest I'm in that I forget there are other fish in the sea (pun intended :))Andy Bartholomewhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08595866158422702129noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5153212183922020877.post-10086255077376398822012-06-30T09:42:00.001-07:002012-06-30T09:42:40.785-07:00Late night round twoI went out with Ben and Ben again last night to try and catch the big channel cats again. We were able to get out there a little earlier this time and scout it out a little bit. We chose our spot and were able to get set up right as the sun was setting.

unfortunately that was to be the only fish caught in that location. We fished there til about 11:30 and after not catching anything else we decided to move locations. We found another spot that looked like it had potential and fished there for a while. A kid fishing nearby and packing up came over and chatted with us and told us he caught a big one over where Brother Ben had casted out. We didn't catch anything the rest of the night except for a small carp that Friend Ben finally managed to catch (it was biting at his line all night long). Some people would call it a waist of a trip but for me it is always fun to get out and hang out with the guys. The stars were out and the moon was shining, it was a fun night out.

It is a word that sends one home very disappointing, with a desire to shake it off as soon as possible. those of you not familiar with fishing terms, the skunk does not refer to an actual skunk (thank goodness). To get "skunked" means you did not catch a single fish. I took out Jedediah (name changed)on thursday to the exact same place that I took Tyrone the day before. We used the same bait, the same place, and about the same time as well, but we only had a few little nibbles. I couldn't believe our luck, Tyrone and I had a great time there just the day before but it was not to be for us this time, the fish just plain out weren't biting. Oh well, it's like they say, that's why they call it fishing and not catching...happens to the best of us.Andy Bartholomewhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08595866158422702129noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5153212183922020877.post-47746041085988972552012-06-27T21:27:00.000-07:002012-06-27T21:27:09.004-07:00Escaping the SunThe last time i went out with Tyrone (name changed), we got a lot of sun mixed with a lot of annoying little mud cats. For those who don't know, mud cats are a small species of catfish that are really annoying and usually swallow the hook. They aren't any fun to catch because they don't put up a fight at all. Well, we went out today and when I asked him what he wanted to do he said "Fishing, but not where we will catch those dang mudcats". I told him I would do my best but couldn't guarantee there wouldn't be mudcats. There was a spot I've been wanting to try along the bear river for quite some time now so we headed over there. We decided to fish underneath the bridge there so we could escape the hot sun. It was worth it! It was nice and cool under there. I caught a fish within the first five minutes, got it right to shore and saw that it was a channel cat and got really excited for its decent size. (I'm in an ongoing catfish contest that lasts until the end of summer.) Right as I was bringing it to shore it got off the hook and swam away! ...(maybe I should invest in a net?).
The fishing continued, Tyrone also had a channel on, it got to shore, then zipped back into deeper waters, as he was struggling to bring it in, the line snapped and it got away. (Okay it didn't snap, I apparently just didn't tie the hook on tight enough and the knot came undone.) All in all it was a pleasant afternoon. We ended up catching catfish, a baby small mouth bass, a baby walleye (pic below), and some carp. I find it funny because in Fayette, we hated catching carp. Carp in Fayette are like mudcats here, they don't hardly put up a fight and are very annoying and are everywhere it seems. Here however, some of my best fighting fish I've caught have been carp.

He is 11 years old and loves to fish and be outdoors. He is also really loving scouting. I've taken Ricky a couple of times to fish and he's gone with the scouts, but to no avail, he had never caught a fish. I was dumbfounded last week when we went to a money hole for trout and nothing...we saw bout ten swimming around but they just gave us the fin. I went out with him today and told myself, if he can't catch a mudcat, I don't know what he can. So off we went to Cutler Resivour and we hooked on the trusty worm and what do you know? He caught his first fish! He was so excited! I almost convinced him to kiss it ;). He blew it a kiss and kept talking about how beautiful the fish was. I can't wait to get him some bigger, more satisfying fish.

Wke got up and headed out to a spot along the bear river where I had pulled out a decent size Catfish a couple of weeks ago. We met our friends John and Derick there and set up for a fun day. The fishing was hot at first. I have a two pole permit and I couldn't keep both in the water, one hit after another. All of them were pretty little. The problem of the day, was that the river was really low and we kept getting our lines snagged. I lost probably 3 different hook sets. I finally gave up and packed most of the stuff up. I walked over and talked to Derick for a while and was about to start casting a spinner in when Ben came up with his gear packed wanting to try a different spot on the river. The only thing i caught were two mudcats though. It was a fun day of fishing, if only I hadn't been so tired, it would have been even more fun.

I asked Kat if she was okay with baby and she was a sport and told me to go and have fun...( I guess I didn't really tell her exactly HOW late I was going to be, we didn't get back til 3:30 am)
Well, Friend Ben and I decided that we would leave around 8. By the time we got the car loaded, it was 8:30. We headed down to Brigham City to meet brother Ben.
<p/><p/><p/>
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyp0JTd6ZSZhCN9V8fUdOvvPgDufbOMTSW-JUTBzGBSXjWiZ7Yk2lh0gpRh7ZCOvl3RaTahLBcXpslepRnXw-sIVgjF-nRYgOjXpgbEIT6xj8p-Iw296WkhK-BsOxLTVthB4kmKlAl56k/s1600/carloded.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="180" width="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyp0JTd6ZSZhCN9V8fUdOvvPgDufbOMTSW-JUTBzGBSXjWiZ7Yk2lh0gpRh7ZCOvl3RaTahLBcXpslepRnXw-sIVgjF-nRYgOjXpgbEIT6xj8p-Iw296WkhK-BsOxLTVthB4kmKlAl56k/s320/carloded.jpg" /></a>
<p/><p/><p/><p/>
We picked brother Ben up in Brigham City along with some cold beverages (Mt. Dew) and snacks and we were on our way to the refuge. We arrived just as it was getting dark and the bugs and sqeeters were nuts! We used a lot of bug spray to finally ward them off a little bit. We set up our poles and chairs and set out to wait. I had brought some old glow sticks that I wasn't sure worked and we were able to get four to work and hung them on the tips of mine and brother Ben's poles so we could see if we had a bite. They seemed to work alright. Friend Ben just set his drag real low so that if he had a bite he would hear the line being took.

<p/><p/><p/>
The fishing was slow to start but eventually picked up. We didn't ever catch a giant Cat that we were after but we had few decent ones and lots of babies. Friend Ben had the best catch of the night with this 22 incher...
<p/><p/><p/>

<p/><p/><p/>
Friend Ben also brought some gigs with him in case we saw/caught carp. They were fun to play with. <p/><p/><p/><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjkbl0GeBmGePvjmfbOtlkgD3rHiISoh21Z0MXQ4738uh4JW5Vu6d-rboDpFQ6zR6tqQwJVLVYyl6FiSKZJX4WSa6vs30-vP31kmuyrgys8S-zI19Vew7w2hU8Zpo9auPDuFmgST6zaKaE/s1600/bencarp.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="320" width="181" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjkbl0GeBmGePvjmfbOtlkgD3rHiISoh21Z0MXQ4738uh4JW5Vu6d-rboDpFQ6zR6tqQwJVLVYyl6FiSKZJX4WSa6vs30-vP31kmuyrgys8S-zI19Vew7w2hU8Zpo9auPDuFmgST6zaKaE/s320/bencarp.jpg" /></a>
<p/><p/><p/>
Brother Ben had the idea to cut up one of the carp we caught to use as bait. He caught one I believe on that bait. Over all, it was a great night. I enjoyed being able to hang out with my friends and have a guys night out. Another night adventure is definitely in the works. Here are a few more pics from the night.

I took johnny out today at three and we decided to hit up the cache junction marina on Cutler Res. We got out there and not two minutes into the first cast and Johnny had himself a nice little small mouth caught on a worm. <p/><p/><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_xMLnOru2LT9J3j75XTxn34dYWHjrLn_HJnsr85C4SE7G5N-FtFwbZflVaU-P7j2t7ErvnG3ZKqJenD6PHDy3jJh483pHGV5nflmWu85NypwEQpY4FeK2qxjc5_jjF2_ujygW-uh0nCc/s1600/bass1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="320" width="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_xMLnOru2LT9J3j75XTxn34dYWHjrLn_HJnsr85C4SE7G5N-FtFwbZflVaU-P7j2t7ErvnG3ZKqJenD6PHDy3jJh483pHGV5nflmWu85NypwEQpY4FeK2qxjc5_jjF2_ujygW-uh0nCc/s320/bass1.jpg" /></a>
<p/><p/><p/>
Unfortunately it didn't survive but lucky for us my friend Ben was coming out to fish and said he'd take it and fry it up. Ben arrived and Johnny caught himself a mudcat. (mudcat's aren't worthy of a picture in my book.) Johnny seemed to have all the luck today and pulled in another small mouth and a pretty decent sized bluegill...<p/><p/>
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizmXm9vDMEF_cfp7HwJ-UJ_I9egCRw100cFBsJad1IK9hzVueA8ZUPe7U20ncDgn6qfCUZTtucq-8xDzbZDo1OYgwmB3hpUly6zy528JsXlXNmoDhKuZfXklKhKXVZEyWYB3BWNSHjFB4/s1600/bluegill.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="320" width="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizmXm9vDMEF_cfp7HwJ-UJ_I9egCRw100cFBsJad1IK9hzVueA8ZUPe7U20ncDgn6qfCUZTtucq-8xDzbZDo1OYgwmB3hpUly6zy528JsXlXNmoDhKuZfXklKhKXVZEyWYB3BWNSHjFB4/s320/bluegill.jpg" /></a>
<p/><p/><p/>
Ben decided to keep both bass and the bluegill to fry up. (and they were both tasty!) I finally had a tug on my line and pulled in a small carp. I killed him and cut him up for some bait because channel cat's tend to have a taste for carp meat. Unfortunately time had the best of us and it was time to go home before I had a real chance to fish with the carp very long. A man fishing near us under the bridge did pull up a really nice channel though. He brought it over to show his dad/friend? who was napping under a picnic table. (I know weird) That was a nice cat! I wish I would have snapped a photo of it. My guess is it managed an upwords of 26-28 inches long.<p/><p/>
last night Johnny also snagged this 10 lb carp. I had to help him bring it in because that was the hardest fighting fish I had ever felt. He wore the poor kid down lol.<p/><p/>

I don't claim to be an expert fisherman by any means, I learn new things every day, but I have a few friends who are near enough experts and have showed me and continue to show me the ropes to some really fun fishing adventures. One of my jobs I have involves taking youth out, so lately I have done a lot of fishing. This blog is to help me tell the stories of my fishing adventures. Here are a few pics of recent outings I've been on...here on out my posts will include stories of sucess or failure with the pictures.
